Construction and renovation contractors must register with the Secretary of State to do business in Vermont. They do not need  a separate contractor license for their trade.

Electrical Contractor License

With the exception of electrical work on residential duplexes or a other special situations will need a license to do electrical work in Vermont.

The Board issues master, journeyman, and Type-S journeyman licenses.

Type-S Electrical Trade License

• State Electricians Licensing Board-approved training program and one (1) year of work experience or two (2) years of work experience under a licensed electrician
• Eight (8) hours of continuing education in your specialty every three (3) years.

• Outdoor advertising
• Refrigeration or air conditioning
• Appliance and motor repair
• Well pumps          
• Gas pumps and bulk plants
• Farming equipment          
• Commercial fire alarm system
• Lightning rod installation            
• Elevator
• Household fire detection
• Electric lock installation
  

Journeyman Electrical Trade License

• State Electricians Licensing Board-approved -approved apprenticeship program of 576 hours and 8,000 hours of experience under a licensed electrician.
• State Electricians Licensing Board-approval needed to accept military or out-of-state work experience for these requirements.

Master Electrician Trade License

• Two (2) years of experience as a journeyman
• State Electricians Licensing Board -approved equivalent experience, or have completed the journeyman's requirements and 4,000 hours work experience.

Plumber Contractor License

The State Plumbers Licensing Board issues three (3) licenses:

Specialist Plumber License

• Water heater specialist, hydronic heating specialist, and water treatment specialist.
• State Plumbers Licensing Board-approved instruction, training, and experience.

Journeyman Plumber’s License

• State Plumbers Licensing Board-approved apprenticeship program or Board-approved equivalent experience.

Master Plumber’s License

• One (1) year of experience as a journeyman or State Plumbers Licensing Board -approved equivalent experience

Consumers are advised to check for additional local municipal contractor license requirements as contractor laws can differ from county to county. It is also advised to double check with the state’s requirements before hiring a contractor.
