To do residential building or renovating in South Dakota does not require a contractor license.

Electrician Trade License

The South Dakota Electrical Commission issues licenses for all electricians.

Class B Electrical Trade License

  • Only residential and farm electrical work
  • Two (2) years of experience as a journeyman
  • Public liability insurance for at least $300,000
  • Post a $10,000 bond
  • Write a trade license exam on the National Electrical Code

Journeyman Electrician Trade License

  • Four (4) years apprenticeship in wiring, installing and repairing electrical apparatus and equipment
  • Write a trade license exam on the National Electrical Code

Electrician Contractor License

  • 4,000 hours as a journeyman electrician.
  • Write a trade license exam on the National Electrical Code

Plumber's Trade License

Journeyman Plumber License

  • Four (4) years of experience as an apprentice
  • Pass an exam based on the Standard Plumbing Code
Plumbing Contractor License
  • Pass an exam based on the Standard Plumbing Code
  • Six (6) years experience as a plumbing contractor, plumber, or plumber’s apprentice with at least two (2) of those years serving as a plumbing contractor or journeyman plumber
