Contractor License

To apply for a contractor license in North Carolina. There are three (3) license limitations:

• Limited $17,000 less than $350,000
• Intermediate $75,000 less than $700,000
• Unlimited $150,000 no limit

Any applicant must also include three (3) letters of reference that are less than six (6) months old.

General Contractor License

The North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors issues contractor licenses that require the passing f an exam. :

Plumbing/Heating and Fire Protection Sprinkler Contractor's License

To get a Fire Protection Sprinkler contractor license requires a license from the State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors.

There are three (3) classes of licenses:

Class I: This classification covers plumbing, heating, and fire sprinkler systems for all structures.

• Two (2) years related experience with ½ as academic or technical training.

Class II: This classification covers plumbing and heating systems in single-family detached residential dwellings.

• Two (2) years related experience with ½ as academic or technical training.

Fuel Piping License: - This classification covers contracts or installations of fuel piping extending from an approved fuel source at or near a premises and supply fuel to any systems, equipment, or appliances inside the premises.

• One (1) years related experience with ½ as academic or technical training.

Electrical Contractor License

The State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors issues these licenses:

• Limited
• Intermediate: A bond of $25,000
• Unlimited: A bond of $75,000
• Specialty
• Single-Family Detached Residences
• Low Voltage
• Plumbing And Heating
• Electric Sign
• Elevator
• Groundwater Pump
• Swimming Pool Bonding

The Board has reciprocal licensing with Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

Consumers are advised to check for additional local municipal contractor license requirements as contractor laws can differ from county to county. It is also advised to double check with the state’s requirements before hiring a contractor.
