Mississippi State Contractor License Requirements

In the state of Mississippi a certificate or license is required for all construction except handyman projects. Recognized licenses from another state are accepted in Mississippi. This includes plumbing, electrical and other specialty trades a s Mississippi does not have specific licenses for these trades.

Residential Building License

For anyone to build a residence that is three (3) stories in height or less, and the cosy is $50,000 or more, he or she must have a Residential Building License from the Mississippi Contractor Licensing Board.

Residential Remodeling License

Any one who takes on a job to remodel any residence that would cost $10,000 or more must have a Residential Remodeling License from the Mississippi Contractor Licensing Board.

For both residential building and remodeling contractors must have:

  • Worker’s compensation insurance
  • Liability Insurance
  • Federal and state tax numbers
  • Certificate of Authority from the Mississippi Secretary of State
  • Info on company organization, personnel finances, company financial condition, equipment and experience
  • Pass a Residential Trade exam by PSI Examination Services

Commercial Construction Contractor's Certificate

Mississippi Contractor Licensing Board issues certificates in:

  • Building construction
  • Electrical work
  • Heavy construction
  • Highway, street, bridge construction
  • Mechanical work
  • Specialty work

For both commercial building and remodeling contractors must have:

  • Worker’s compensation insurance and liability insurance for 300,000 per occurrence and $600,000 aggregate
  • Federal and state tax numbers
  • Certificate of Authority from the Mississippi Secretary of State
  • Info on company organization, personnel finances, company financial condition, equipment and experience
  • Pass a pass both a business and law exam and a trade exam by PSI Examination Services
