General building contractors do not need to have a contractor license to do work in Maine.

Asbestos Abatement Contractor Licenses

Any person who works with asbestos in the state of Maine requires certification and/or licensing by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. The licenses include:

• Full
• In-house (limited to owner properties)
• Conditional (limited to roofing or siding)

A contractor license requires the following:

• Access to at least one state-approved asbestos disposal site
• A worker protection and medical monitoring plan approved by EPA, OSHA, and/or Code of Federal Regulations
• Know all applicable state and federal standard for asbestos abatement projects
• Provide operating training for all employees before starting a job
• Comply with all state, EPA, OSHA, and Code of Federal Regulation rules
• Provide a list of all personnel, including at least one certified Supervisor, and asbestos equipment
• A list of states that he or she is licensed in for asbestos work
• A list of any citations or charges received in last two (2) years for asbestos work
• Have proof that all company employees have been certified by the Department

In addition the Department issues certificates to the following asbestos trades:

• Worker
• Air monitor

Supervisor Air analyst

• Bulk analyst
• Design consultant
• Management planner
• Inspector
  

Electrician Contractor License

Electrical work in the state of Maine requires licensing.

Journeyman
Master
Limited (This includes these electrical trades)

• Water pumps
• House wiring
• Outdoor signs
• Refrigeration
• Gasoline dispensing
• Low energy
• Traffic signals
• Crane Technician
  

Master's Electrician’s License

• 12,000 hours of work experience or 4,000 hours working as a journeyman.

Journeyman Electrician’s License

• 8,000 hours of work experience,
• A combination of work experience
• Graduation from an accredited technical school, or
• Work experience and an apprenticeship program.

For either a master's or journeyman's a completion requirement of 576 hours of study needs to be approved by the Board. As well, there is a 45 hour course on the current National Electrical Code.

Plumber Contractor License

Master Plumber License

At least one (1) year with 2,000 hours of work experience as a journeyman or four years with 8,000 hours of work as a trainee plumber.

Journeyman License

At least two (2) years with 4,000 hours of work experience as a trainee plumber.

The Plumbers' Examining Board reviews each application and they deem the applicant is eligible they send back information on the exam required for the trade. There is no exam for a trainee. The exam is a three (3) hour, closed book with 100 multiple choice questions.

Consumers are advised to also check for municipal contractor license requirements as contractor laws can differ from county to county. It is also advised to double check with the state’s requirements before hiring a contractor.
