Indiana State Contractor License Requirements

In Indiana only plumbing contractors have to be licensed by the state. Both a construction and renovation contractor license is given out at the city or county level. Applicants are advised to contact the city and/or county where they wish to work for information regarding which contractor license is required. However, any work carried out for Public Works projects or for the Department of Transportation must be carried out by certified contractors.

Plumbing Contractor License

For the plumbing contractor license an applicant will need one these:

  • Four (4) years in an apprenticeship program
  • Four (4) years (or 6,400 hours) plumbing work experience
  • Four (4) years plumbing experience under a licensed plumbing contractor

For the journeyman license you need one of these:

  • Four (4) years in an approved apprenticeship program
  • Four (4) years (or 6,400 hours) work experience in the trade.

The plumbing contractor license exam has three sections

Practical section - copper pipe project and soil pipe project.
Written section  - multiple choice.
Drawing section - on sanitary drainage and water distribution systems.

Applicants who already possess a journeyman's license only have to pass the written and drawing section in order to receive a contractor's license.
