Build a Great Workout Room In Your Home

Remodel that spare bedroom, basement space, or loft, into a workout room for your family.  A place to exercise is a home improvement project that will pay for itself in more than just increasing your home’s value; it can extend your years of life.  A professional contractor can quickly and efficiently help you build the exercise room of your dreams.

In many homes the exercise bike, treadmill, weight bench, or Nordic Track are used for drying and storing clothing.  While they may have been used a few times, most likely they are off in a corner of a room causing guilt when seen so they are covered up.

We all would like to be in better shape.  With the pace of our lives getting to the gym is difficult and even if we start going, something always gets in the way.  Work, family, other activities, there are lots of priorities and going to gym is the first one to fall off.

The key to a workout room remodel is to make the room as convenient and functional for your family as possible.  You can't just put a weight bench and your old treadmill down in the basement and call it a workout room. Like any other room in your home, you want it to be warm and welcoming. You will want to spend time in your workout room, not dreading going there.

Your workout room also needs to be functional for everyone in your family.  A TV and stereo system is a must.  If you have little kids toys, games, and stuff for them to do is a must or you will have to jump off the bike to check on the argument over the checkers set.

While many of us would like to get up early in the morning and start the day off with exercise, the reality of our lives means we need to work out when we can fit it into our schedule.  Having a comfortable, convenient room in our home can help get us exercising more.

The workout space needs a comfortable safe floor that is padded enough to support and cushion floor and exercises as well as little hands and knees that will be playing while you are working out.  Having a couch, maybe even a coffee table can make it feel more like a real family room your family will want to spend time in.  Make sure to have mirrors on at least one wall.  Mirrors make the room look larger, lighter, and give important perspective for safety when lifting weights.

Make sure to use recessed or other modern lighting and quality trim to add a note of warmth to the room.  Self-adhesive carpet squares are durable and will help cushion floor exercises. You can add a room dividing blind for privacy or leave it open. 

A climbing wall is a great feature that adds fun for the whole family and keeps younger members of the family occupied while you sneak in a quick 20-30 minute workout.  Additionally, make sure you have adequate storage space and holders for towels, water, and equipment you need to put up between workouts such as free weights or cables.
