Waterproof Your Home From The Outside

Have you looked in your crawlspace recently?  If you are looking to purchase an existing home or have a home being built new, you need to know about waterproofing your home.  If you are considering remodeling your kitchen, renovating your bathroom, or having an addition put onto your home you need to get up to speed on waterproofing.

Heavy winter precipitation and high humidity can be a real threat to basements and crawlspaces. Even in mild-weathered climates there can be puddles of water found in a basement or crawlspace.  The problem is caused by rainwater or melting snow spilling off the roof pouring down gutters and downspouts saturating the ground. Eventually, the water saturation in the ground squeezes water up through the foundation or slab cracks. The result is a flooded crawlspace or basement.

The best thing you can do to solve this problem is to control water flow off of your home's roof, gutters, and siding.  Another important step is to ensure you seal up and repair any cracks that may be in your home's foundation walls or slab.

Consult a waterproofing contractor about how controlling the water as it flows down onto your home.  You will want to be sure and waterproof your home or if necessary you may need to install a new drainage system to solve the problem.

Waterproof Your Home From The Inside

9 times out of 10 when people have a bathroom remodel accomplished or renovate their kitchen water damage is found and the work that must be redone is much more than planned for.  The reason for this extra work is water damage to the inside of your home.

Water damage inside your home occurs where there is water.  That may seem obvious yet people allow water to leak around sinks, tubs, and showers.  You need to make sure your caulking around these water handling portals is 100% effective.  If you see it peeling up, changing color, or cracking, you need to have a professional contractor come into your home and re-caulk the surface.  The cost of a re-caulking is far less than the cost the water damage will do.

That is the real problem with water damage to the interior of our house, you don’t see it for a long time.  Then by the time you do see it the damage is catastrophic and expensive.

The bottom line with water damage is you need to be vigilant at all times.  Whether your home is new or older, make sure all your seams around areas that are conduits are well sealed with no sign of damage.

Every few years you need to make sure you have a competent professional check the seams inside you house and the gutters and drains outside you home to ensure you aren’t heading towards water penetration of your home, externally or internally.
