Frequent Inspection and Prevention; the Best Type Fence Repair
Extensive fence repair can be avoided by an annual inspection of
fence post, support rail, and vertical picket condition, preferably
in the spring. A fence post that has become damaged by water or
insect rot can bring down a whole section of fence.
Fence lines weakened by gale strength winter winds combined with
heavy accumulations of snow and ice can collapse when least expected.
Both conditions could necessitate costly wooden fence repair without
inspection for possible damage and intervention.
Use Water and Insect Resistant Materials
Other preventative measures include careful selection of fence
material when initially installing a fence. Using only pressure
treated wood fence post for corner and line posts, and pressure
treated lumber for support rails helps ward off premature need for
repairs.
Although not as effective as pressure treated wood, cedar fence
material and redwood fence components also provide resistance to
water and insect damage.
Proper Fence Post Installation
When initially undertaking fence post installation, using fence
post setting techniques that will insure proper drainage around
fence posts adds longevity to any wood fence; privacy fence or classic
white picket fence. Whether set in concrete or tamped soil, fence
posts should be installed so that water will drain away from the
post. This helps prevent water from pooling around the post; causing
premature rotting and breakage.

Fence Post Repair Tips
When an annual inspection does reveal damage, especially to a
corner post or line post, immediately undertaking fence post repair
can adequately solve the problem. Repair can be completed without
the time and expense of removing an entire section of fence or having
to complete a whole new fence post installation. Use one of these
two methods:
- Installing splints to a broken fence post can be done using
two 2X4s and bolts. Bevel one end of each 2X4 to a point. Drive
the 2X4s at least 18 – 24 inches into the ground on each
side of the post; leave at least 18 – 24 inches above ground.
Using a paddle bit, drill holes horizontally through all three
layers of wood; the 2X4, the post, and the 2X4 on the other side.
Drill 2 or more holes in vertical alignment spaced 4 – 6
inches apart. Insert bolts through the holes, and bolt the 2X4s
and post firmly together.
- Repairing a wobbly fence post can be accomplished by temporarily
bracing the fence and post, and then digging out around and under
the post. After making sure the fence and post are level and plumb,
pour new concrete around the post using bags of pre-mix concrete.
Follow directions on the bag; add the proper amount of water when
mixing. Remember to slope the concrete away from the fence post
to initiate proper water drainage.
