The homeowner who has suffered damage to a residence from fire, smoke, or water, will naturally want to the job of restoration to begin as soon as possible. While this is understandable, it may also lead to hasty decisions being made that could lead to more difficulties. For this reason, it is best that homeowner wait until the insurance company has given the “OK” for the home repairs and restoration process to begin.
It is true that the waiting may be the hardest part; however, one may discover that the insurance company has a particular restoration service that it knows is reputable and performs high-quality work. If the homeowner trusts the adjuster’s judgment, then that is just one less decision the homeowner must make.
If the insurance company does not have a preferred company, or if the homeowner for some reason does not wish to use the preferred company, and IF the insurance company allows the use of an “outside” business, the homeowner should take the time to make a careful search for the right company.
A reputable company be honest and forthright with the homeowner as to whether or not repairs can be made, and adequate restoration accomplished, or if it will be necessary for full rebuilding or replacing of damaged items. The unscrupulous person may tell someone that something can be repaired, when indeed it needed total rebuilding, or may even tell the homeowner that something must be completely replaced when it could have been repaired or restored.
The homeowner will want to ask for references, and contact those people who have actually used the company’s services. Further, the careful homeowner will ask to see all required licenses, permits, and other necessary documents, including employees’ right-to-work authorization (“green cards”) if necessary.
